Director

As an actress, I learned from great directors. Sir Anthony Hopkins directed me in his HB Studio production of HAMLET. Playing Ophelia under his guidance was in equal measure fascinating and intimidating. He would often step in and “play” the other character. He gave so much as an actor in those moments, he taught me to simply hit the ball back. He taught me to create that environment for my actors.

Anna Deveare Smith taught me to seek inspiration in all the arts. Not only theatre. When she directed me in her production of THE CUBAN THING at the American Conservatory Theatre, she wanted her cast to visit museums, listen to Cuban music, watch THE GODFATHER PART II, visit different neighborhoods in the city. I have taken that sensibility into my directing even more fervently than I did in my acting days.
